Hi Tony,

I guess it is the nature of a list like this that most of us spend most of
our time listing problems, confident that another lister will have a
solution, so it is good to hear the other side of the coin.

Regards.

Graham (91 S4)

With all the constant little problems of our 928's I read about on our list,
I thought I would cheer up at least potential owners of these cars with the
experiences I've had of mine. POO 928 (928S2) has now put up with me for the
last nine years and has now done 158000 miles. When I was working on a
reasonable salary, I used to get anything that needed fixing or servicing as
and when it was required by an independent Porsche specialist (Peter Tognola
in Datchet) whose expertise and hourly rates were much better than OPC's.
Over 8 years this cost me £11090 - about £1386/year. Tyres are not included
in this and averaged about £500-700/ set about every 12000 miles. The car
also had a part respray about 7 years ago costing £1100. . The purchase cost
to me was £9200 and it is probably worth half that now. The number plate
cost an additional £750 and probable worth about the same. So totting this
up; £11090 + £3000 tyres + £1100 respray + £4600 depreciation = £19790. Over
this period the car covered 63077 miles so the running costs have been about
31p/mile. The major incidents over this time were new radiator, torque tube
overhaul/bearings and complete brake renewal (twice). For the last 18
months I have been retired and no longer have the same income to fund to
the same level of maintenance. I have done a further 13000 over this period.
The costs for the last 18 months have been about £1000 (1 service, new water
pump and cam belt and 2 tyres -done by an ex-928 mechanic). I no longer have
the aircon working, the cruise control and electric mirror adjustment, I
think the car is too low and the auto transmission has to be used
sympathetically, but it runs well and I get between 18-23 to the gallon.
It's not driven as hard as it used to be- and cruising is only 80-95 now. (I
once blew an exhaust gasket whilst keeping up with a Lister Storm round
country lanes). I find the car isn't so costly if it is driven more gently-
but perhaps something is looming round the corner? When we eventually move
house I hope to get an S4 or GTS with some of the spare equity, being only a
little concerned about their ageing complexity. I've written this to give
some idea of 928 costs of ownership and experience. The car has only let me
down twice in this time- once when the handbrake mechanism locked up the
back wheel and the other when the water pump seized up which then broke the
cam belt (luckily on tick over doing no valve damage). I hope this
encourages more 928 ownership.

Tony
