Steve,

Regarding the 'Pirtle' tips which John copied for you - if it helps,
when looking into the driver's door mirror face, the plastic locking
ring must be rotated anti-clockwise to unlock, and clockwise to lock.

This means that, with a screwdriver inserted through the hole under the
mirror, and its blade engaged in one of the slots in the ring, the
screwdriver handle should be moved to the left to unlock the ring. The
mirror body acts as a pivot for the screwdriver shaft, and the tip of
the blade therefore turns right, thus rotating the locking ring in an
anti-clockwise direction. You may have to do this more than once, as
there are several slots in the locking ring and it may be necessary to
take another 'bite' as another slot presents itself.

I've only had the driver's side out, and I'd be interested if anyone
knows whether the passenger side locking ring needs to be rotated in
the same direction, or if it is a 'mirror image' (sorry!) of the
driver's side.

There is also a small locking pin located below the ring, which rides
up an incline before dropping into a slot, presumably to provide a bit
of security by preventing the locking ring rotating under vibration.
You may need to lever the mirror glass up vertically as you rotate the
locking ring in order to help the pin disengage.
