[928uk] Decoding the VIN

I've just been trying to decode my chassis number 92zFS841734. The lack of
an initial WPO-ZZZ threw me off for a bit!

As I understand it, that means:
92...8..... means it's a 928
..z........ is just a filler
...F....... means 1985
....S...... means it was made in Stuttgart
......4.... means it's a rest-of-world S-series.
.......1734 is the serial number

But I also have a sticker on my passenger door which says:

539   7   3
Weissgoldmetallic
     S6

The 539 I know is the code for Weissgoldmetallic, but can anyone tell me
what the 7, 3 and S6 mean?

Also, there's a good history of model sub-types on
http://www.928registry.org/928-History.htm
<http://www.928registry.org/928-History.htm> but it seems to be geared for
the North American porsches - all the chassis codes are "92...86....". Does
anyone know if that history's valid for the "92...84...." porsches? For
example, would the following be true for my car:

 1985 928 S  VIN Range - WP0JB092_FS860001 - 2279

*
Base MSRP up to: $50,000

*
Engine displacement increases to 5.0L with 288 bhp & 302 ft/lbs

*
LH fuel injection unit with hot wire air-flow sensor

*
New manual transmission with Borg-Warner synchronizers

*
Curb weight = 3,439(auto)/3,351(5-spd)

Thanks all!

Geoff

Hi Bill

You can use the following:

 To Decode the VIN

WPO = World Manufacturer code (West Germany, Porsche).

ZZZ = filler for Rest of the World (RoW) models (US models have something
called a VDS code here).

'nn' = first two digits of the model designation.

Z = filler.

M = model year (series begins).

A=1980 (chassis numbers).

B=1981 (first year of VIN code), etc and omits "I" and "O". 2000=0 (zero),
2001=1 etc).

S = place of manufacture (Stuttgart).

8 = third digit of model designation.

4 = model sub-type (eg in the 80s, "4" designated the RoW mainstream 928S/S4
model and "6" the USA, Japan and Canada model.

0001 = car's serial number.
