[928uk] Clutch question

Daniel,
There's no reason to suspect that your clutch lining material will be worn
out by a particular mileage... it obviously depends wholly on how the car
has been used (e.g. lots of motorway use = long life for the clutch plate)
Your 'squeak' could be the thrust bearing... or it could be the pilot
bearing (bearing that holds the end of the "clutch driveshaft" in the
flywheel) which has gotten some bad press of late. Like the thrust bearing,
a pilot bearing should carry on working for a long time in 'squeaky mode'
before it disintegrates.
I'm just wondering if your 'snatchy' clutch could be due to a poorly pilot
bearing - its possible.
Have you priced up a full clutch kit? I don't think you'll replace it all
"just in case" when you see the price! The upside is that its very easy to
work on 928 clutches compared to 'normal' cars where the clutch is
sandwiched between the gearbox & engine (remember, your g'box is "out
back"!).

I have a late (J-reg) GT which has now done 105,000 miles on the
original clutch. I have no reason to expect that it is getting worn, but
my feeling is that it can't last much longer can it? It has a slightly
squeaky thrust bearing (i.e. touch the clutch pedal and the squeak goes
away) but that is liveable with. The clutch is pretty snatchy/jumpy when
trying to pull off slowly.
My question is, when a clutch begins to go, over what distance will it
typically become unusable? I am planning a couple of thousand miles over
the summer and I really don't want to get stuck in need of a clutch. Am
I just being paranoid or should I get it replaced sooner rather than
later?
Daniel
