In the interests of science and fellow listers, particularly early cars
viz.928 (without much electronics),I have been charging and jump starting
(from other batteries,'ware using cars) my 79 model through the 'terminals'
under the bonnet.
My 4 amp charger soon settles down to 1 amp or so. I have jump started it at
least one hundred times.....have I been lucky or was my local car electrian
correct when he took one look at the thickness of the wires involved and
announced both charging and jump starting safe......this continues to puzzle
me! Mike (T reg)

The early cars don't have a problem in the same way as the S4 and later.
It's the later LH ECUs that are fragile.
