To answer your questions, yes they can see in the dark, they work in the same way as a laser sight on a gun, putting out a pin point accurate laser beam. Range is about 1 Km. I should say it doesn't have night sight as such, but if you had your head lights on then they could see you.
They don't need to see the whole car but they do need to see a flat surface. This is to allow a reflection back to the gun. Target area is normally the number plate although it will work of other areas of the car.
They should have shown you the captured speed at the time.
Why do I know all this? because I bought one once for the Depatment of Transport and had the chance to play with one. That's far as my admissions go today before I get shot.
In my defence the day I was given a demonstration of a laser speed gun I was caught with the old type radar gun. The ex police man selling the laser drove past me!
