Yes I would say it is normal, occasionally my 1988 SE used to do this 
as if it were just starting a cycle again. Missing a beat is a good 
description.
My 89 GT doesnt seem to do it however.

Amazing isnt it. Its accurate. Ive got 400 miles out of a full tank a 
couple of times
