Hi everyone, a little tale as I've just purchased my first 928 about 3
weeks ago, an 86 S4 manual in white with burgundy trim. This should have
proved to be an unforgettable three weeks but unfortunately has turned out
to be just a little frustrating. Towards the end of the trip home to Crawley
Sussex from Hatfield, just north of London, I noticed that something was not
quite right.....the clutch started to slip under power! Great, just what I
needed. Feeling just a little stictched-up I got straight on the phone as
soon as I reached home and managed to come to an agreement with its previous
owner. He denied all knowledge saying that he'd hardly used the car lately,
but said he'd pick up the bill for parts leaving me to pay for the
labour......fair enogh I guess, his bill was going to be bigger than mine! I
felt that I got the car for a good price so I could live with that. I booked
it in at Addspeed in Horsham and carried on using it for a couple of
days.......then out of the blue the clutch pedal hit the floor, never to
return. Burst flexi pipe, brilliant! Eventually it was loaded onto a truck
and carted off for surgery. When the call came to pick her up I just
couldn't wait, finally a chance to find out exactly what this thing can do.
The drive home was bliss, a couple of long hard squirts down the dual
carriageway. I was simply blown away. A couple of hours later I picked up a
friend for a spin, a short spin as it turned out. After a quick blast down
the road she started to run like a dog, no power at all and as rough as you
like. Anyway, back to the garage once again. The next day I was told that
the timing belt was slack and had managed to jump 3 teeth on one side. But
the belt had been replaced in 2002, 10k miles ago!!! Turns out the tensioner
was in a very bad way and was obviously not replaced with the belt. Well
looks like I've got away with it and hope to get her back this week. Be
great to actually use my great white landshark....wish me luck!

Jay.
