[928uk] 1979 cam belt... valves?

Hi All, I recently acquired, from my dad, a 1979 left hooker with a cam
belt that had slipped. He took it to his mechanic who checked fuel pump,
fuel injection etc and finally took the cam covers off to find the belt
was really loose. My dad had the car for 6 years and to be honest wanted
something with lower maintenance costs so gave it to me to try and fix.
I have just put a belt on it, got it fired up and found that it
mis-fires quite badly. Some months ago when he first had the problem
Vince and John Holdsworth kindly got back to me to suggest that on early
928s there is a slim to no chance of trashing valves/pistons if the belt
goes. Has any one had any experience with early cam belts going? Lastly
I do want to check the firing order is still correct (the mechanic may
have changed it?) I know the firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 but can
anyone tell me which cylinder is which? Any help on any subjects will be
great.
Thanks Mike Corrigan
