[928uk] Immobiliser blues

Bloody alarm system.  '91 S4
Pressing the keyfob (std factory fit alarm I am told) causes the locks 
to drop and the indicators to flash, but then the locks pop up again!
The car is open, but immobilised and will not start until the fob is 
pressed again.

Although the couple of plastic boxes I believe constitute the 
alarm/immobiliser in the fuse/relay area are attached using the proper 
connectors, they look as if they have been shoved in there as an 
afterthought.
The system has the ultrasonic sensors, and the override switch next to 
the handbrake, and it all works (never tried closing the windows 
automatically though).
The door locking worked when I bought the car last year.

Anyone any ideas.
