[928uk] Vibration

I have a 1991 S4 which is suffering with vibration at 2000rpm and 3000rpm. A local Porsche centre had the car and after changing all HT leads, ditributor caps and rotor arms due to a miss-fire the vibration remained. They also checked the torque plate and alternator which were both fine. They suggested that the vibration is from the drivetrain and said it would cost approx £4k to investigate further (remove gearbox, diff, axle etc) and could not garauntee that the this would solve the problem. Has anybody experienced similar problems or got any ideas?
