G'day John,
Smiffy has already answered your query and my voltmeter operates exactly as he has stated. The indicators are particularly distracting.
The best thing to do is to just compare the gauge to a cheap digital meter to ensure its operating and then get used to it.
On the subject of batteries, I'm on my third one now in 7 years. Six months ago I fitted a calcium lead battery. It cost about $50 more than a premium lead battery but has the advantage of being able to stand a lot of idle time. I think the advertising blurb says they will hold their charge for 6 weeks. I have let the car sit idle for about a fortnight at the most and the battery is still fully charged. I've put my battery maintainer away. My car normally gets driven once or twice a week.

How accurate is the voltmeter on the dash?
I've noticed that when I start the car after 2 weeks of no use (battery a bit low!), the gauge reads just under 14 volts. After 15 miles of driving the gauge settles at just over 12 volts. Is this normal?
I guess that once the battery is fully charged, the alternator provides less output??
