I use whistler radar and laser gun detector, as Richard mentioned as the
camera's face the opposite way. I.e. take the photo of the rear of the car;
it can be too late to brake before detection. Bought the unit for £100 in
Tenerife a month ago.

I looked into these a while ago and reckoned that the Origin Blue was 
the best option. The problem with the radar devices (apart from the 
cost) is that by the time you have had the warning you are already 
nicked.
There is a device - strictly illegal - that is based on remote garage 
opening technology, that will jam the radar device instantaneously, for 
long enough for you to brake hard and drop your speed. I don't know how 
effective, or how illegal they are. Maybe Hans can tell us.
The most common Gatso GPS detector is the Road Angel, but only because 
of clever marketing, they are not the best and look pants as well
