Hello,
I mentioned before Christmas that I had an article from Fast Lane magazine. My Laptop at home has died and so I have lost certain emails at the moment.
Anyone who wanted a copy please send me an address and I will post out to you. It's on the 928SE.

Hi all
Anyone out there got any tricks/advice for removing spring plates from
rear callipers? Can't get new pads in without grinding down to size
(which I don't want to do). Have got Brembo repair kit. Retaining
bolts are pretty shagged that's before I've had a go at them. Any help
gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Hi all,
Happy new year from France.
Regarding the new automatic cameras in France, they are listed here:
http://www.radarsfixes.com/
You can search the cameras by "Département" or by "road" (or motorway
)number, or by using a map of whole France ("Carte de France") or around
Paris ("Région parisienne").
For a selected radar you have the following information (example: search
on the N12 road)
- "Sens": In which way it works (Only in one ways or the two). This
works in both ways.
- Where it's located (Position in km on a motorway or town elsewhere).
This one is in Bédée.
- "Vitesse": The limitation to respect. I advise you really not to
exceed this! You would be catched at 111 km/h with this one...if the
weather is fine. Otherwise, you don't have to exceed 100 km/h.
- "Disposition": If it's in the middle of the two ways or on the side
one the road. This one is in the middle of the two ways.
- "Flash": "Avant" if it takes the picture of the front or "Arrière" if it takes pictures of the back. Even the motorbikes are caught now...
They are indication of a camera maybe 500 m before it but you can miss
it if there's traffic.
Don't forget, this are the new automatic cameras. The old ones with a
Gendarme on the back are still used and you don't know where they are...
I hope you will still want to come at the 24 Hour of Le Mans Race and Le
Mans Classic. I look forward to meet many of you there.
Regards,
Samuel
PS: By the way, the bloke in the BMW was caught at 243 km/h instead of
of 130 km/h...

Paul/Adrian
Thanks for your consultation on Saturday over my loss of Power steering
and Alternator which turned out to be the main bolt that holds all the
belts onto the front of the crank shaft. Luckily the belts were holding
the pulley on so I don't need to replace that and the aircon pulley
doesn't want to come off its boss at all.
The car should be able to get to JZ Machtech to have a new bolt fitted
(so Paul homefully I wont need one off you - thanks). Hopefully my Dad
will be happy to drive it with a fully charged battery and no power
steering for the 5 miles!
Cheers

Help!
My friends 928 S4 started fine this morning, and after a long run will
not start. Any ideas?
I will check the fuses and fuel pump, but is there a common problem?
The starter motor seems to spin well, but no firing from any cylinder,
no smell of fuel.

If there is no smell of fuel, then I would check;
1. Fuse for fuel pump
2. Fuel pump relay (easy to swap with another '53' one)
3. If 1 & 2 are OK, get a friend to listen to near to the fuel pump to see if it is operating when the ignition is and cranking.
4. If the answer to 3 is no, then it could be the LH ecu is faulty (see John Speake for testing), or a faulty immobilser. Alternatively it could be the pump itself has packed up. To check this the easiest way is to bridge the fuel pump relay and see if the pump runs.
5. If the pump is operating Ok, then it is probably ignition related - check for spark and put a 'Bosch Hammer' on the car as a first step.

Hi
We were looking at a new owners car today (John Bevan) 83S2 and whilst looking the car died of a flat battery. It appears the battery isn't charging, nothing on the dash meter and nothing showing on the electrical test meter.
My limited electrical knowledge suggests a problem with the alternator. Is it possible to get a local auto electrician to refurb these alternators or is it a case of buy another one. Or is there something else obvious weve overlooked.
Help required to restore a new owners pride and joy back to the road.
Cheers
Paul 86S2

My starter seems to be playing up. Before taking it off I have noted the
wires going into the solenoid from the orange cable.
There is also a small short copper braided strap which runs into the actual starter motor housing from the solenoid. From the solenoid end it must be screwed in somewhere, but where it enters the starter housing the bit of metal protruding out has spilt(this is where it enters) Not sure if its
loose(Didn't want to jiggle it as the battery has not been disconnected).
Does anyone know what this little strap is? And if it should be permanently attached to the starter?
Confused. Thanks Brendan

Paul - evening
Try the regulator on the back of the alternator - it houses the brushes etc and when this went on mine I had absolutely no charge at all - Bert Gear has them - they are £26?? ish and therefore the cheapest place to start!

Paul,
Its possible the alternator just failed but more likely to be dirty and loose connectors. Best bet is to start at the battery, recharge it first and check the cells with a Hydrometer. Carry out a capacity test on the battery to see if it is serviceable. Seeing the car just changed hands the battery life may have expired.
Clean the battery terminals till they are shiny then move forward and clean all the terminals on the starter motor and All the earth points on the car. Start the car and check the voltage of the alternator at the jump start terminal in the engine bay, it should be around 13.5 volts, don't take much notice of the dashboard gauge.
Also check the tension of the alternator belt. That flat belt has to be really tight, if I recall correctly its about 9 on the gauge (timing belt is 5).
The alternators can be rebuilt, they are a pain to get off and on though so check everything else first.
My money is on the battery.

Graham Bates '82 928s

guys,
firstly, Happy New Year to all in the group.
Has anyone successfully removed the roof mounted aerial?
If so, how on earth do you do it?
There is a little panel on the underside of the roof lining inside the
cabin. If you flip this open, you can just about see the aerial anchor
screw on the underside of the outer skin of the roof, but I can't see a
way to get at the screw without at least removing the sunroof motor and
bits and bobs.
Any experience much appreciated.
Adrian

This is a tricky job to do, and not for the fainthearted in my opinion.
I have removed the spring plates and replaced them, but the retaining
screws were to knackered to be removed with a torx driver. It would
just round off the points.
I contacted my favourite opc for some advice, and based on their
recommendation removed the calipers so that I could hold them in a vice
and get the right access to the retaining screws. Then i used a chisel
to make a detent in the edge of the retaining screw and another chisel
to drive the screws anti-clockwise (to crack at first and then remove
them a little at a time). Took a while, but did it ok. Then you flip
the caliper over and do the other one. I held the calipers in a vice
with soft jaws to protect the caliper.
With the plates out, you can remove the corrosion and insert the new
ones.
There was a piece about doing this in 911&PW, (April 2003 from memory -
I don't read it regularly, but someone mentioned it to me on another
list) and I think that they welded a tool onto the screw or something -
not sure, worth checking.
I have some pics if you are interested. This was the method that the
opc recommended - "we haven't broke one yet" they said!

Hi Alan, i have heard that the opc technique is to avoid heating to 150 C (
as instructed in manuals), this dramatically increases the probability of ruining the caliper so they can sell a new pair JMHO Tim

Yes youre right but its not as bad as it sounds. Remove the panel, Undo
the Sunroof motor and move it out of the way, (it will rest in the air
on its leads) insert a box spanner and get a relative to hold the
aerial while you get the box spanner onto the nut and undo. The aerial
cable has to be threaded through the spanner. You may have to bend the
sunroof guide out of the way but its not too hard.
Its quite fiddly but very satisfying when its off!

Tin
I have a manual set, and I wasn't keen to heat due to all the seals
around the place. The heat just melts the loctite on the threads.
still not convinced mine would have moved. you had to be there!
I actually like and trust the particular opc I called (have known them
for nearly 10 years), so i followed their advice as they knew i was
stuck, and was only doing the job myself because i couldn't afford them
to do it for me. so i went with it, and it worked. they also knew i
already had a spare set of calipers! i don't think the 911PW guys were
too keen to get the blowlamp out either! as i said - it worked for me.

Hi Alan, remember a decent DOT 4 will boil around 220 so 150 leaves a bit of
room for error, glad your opc is ok, mine's been alright so far esp parts people Cheers Tim

You can uncrew it from the base of the aerial but a little tail is left
with the screw part and some flex.

Agreed. I'm not confident of my ability to measure the temperature to which the parts would be heated.
Have you done the job, btw? how did it go?

Exerpt from an interview...
It amazes me that you're a pro-football fan.
Why ?.
It doesn't fit my image of you.
Which is....
Stanley Kubrick is a perfectionist. He is consumed by mindless anxiety over
every aspect of every film he makes. Kubrick is a hermit, an expatriate, a
neurotic who is terrified of automobiles and who won't let his chauffeur
drive more than thirty miles an hour.
Part of my problem is that I cannot dispel the myths that have somehow
accumulated over the years. Somebody writes something, it's completed
off-the-wall, but it gets filed and repeated until everyone believes it. For
instance, I've read that I wear a football helmet in the car.
You won't let your driver go more than thirty miles an hour, and you wear a
football helmet, just in case.
In fact, I don't have a chauffeur. I drive a Porsche 928 S, and I sometimes
drive it at eighty or ninety miles an hour on the motorway.
Your film editor says you still work on your old films. Isn't that neurotic
perfectionism ?.
I'll tell you what he means. We discovered that the studio had lost the
picture negative of Dr. Strangelove. And they also lost the magnetic master
soundtrack. All the printing negatives were badly ripped dupes. the search
went on for a year and a half. Finally, I had to try to reconstruct the
picture from two....
