use a large flat bladed screwdiver that will fit across the points on the
hexagon turn till you get a thread started and then work it in slowly moving
from point to point on the hex, the wiring loom should stay put as the bolt
turns around it.
Done this a few times, the hard bit is getting the thread started.Once you
have done that bit the rest is easy.
To remove the mirror either prise it off (early car to 85) or insert a small
flat bladed screwdriver through the hole on the lower edge and turn the
bayonet fitting that holds the mirror assembly. the screws that hold the
motors etc can then be removed and for the late cars there is a multplug
behind that gets the whole assembly out of the way.
Much easier than it sounds
Regards
Paul.

Does the wiring loom detach at the mirror end, or in the inside of the
door. If it is from the mirror end, I think that the mirror back has to be
removed but cannot work out how to do this. Can anyone advise ?

You have to remove each pin connector in turn from the plastic housing,
they are just held with a little tab. It's fiddly, but possible. I think I
made a tube of thin brass shim, and pushed that into the housing to release
the pin.
Make a careful note of colours/pins first !
