If its the thermostat, then its an easy job (half an hour max), but I would have expected your electric fans to cut it, so check they are operating correctly aswell with ignition on, engine not running and ac button pressed (slider in normal position), fans should run.

Could be the water pump has packed up - check for strange noises and/or leaks from the front of the engine.  water pump is more of an involved job on a 928 S4, but I think Paul was doing a special offer on these + cambelt replacement.
