This is the sort of item I'm considering, Diederik.  Prices vary from 20 to
90 quid, but they'll only do any good if the cigarette socket is live with
the ignition turned off and I've not got around to checking that yet!  Apart
from a diode to prevent it from *drawing* current overnight, I'm not sure
how to choose between them.

I also noticed a few months ago the existence of a solar-power device that
connects to the cigarette lighter and that charges your battery. That is
under the assumption that your car is stored outside -although I am not sure
how much it would charge in these misty conditions. I remember the price was
in the £40-50 bracket. Could that solve the constant insecurity of having a
flat battery ?
