[928uk] 928 batteries

I am not a technical expert - I am residing on the other end of the scale -
but I have the feeling that quite a large number of 928 owners have battery
problems. Without going into a conversation like we had about the best
engine oil for a 928, is there anybody who can suggest a good battery for
the 928?

I also noticed a few months ago the existence of a solar-power device that
connects to the cigarette lighter and that charges your battery. That is
under the assumption that your car is stored outside -although I am not sure
how much it would charge in these misty conditions. I remember the price was
in the £40-50 bracket. Could that solve the constant insecurity of having a
flat battery ?

Nadeem

I've just replaced my battery (91GT). Called Bosch direct; they looked up
the make and model and gave me a battery number with 88AH capacity, but this
turned out to be a truck battery of completely the wrong size.

The one inside the car was a Varta, and the replacement I ended up getting
from my local auto factors was a Bosch Silver (I understand Varta are part
of the Siemens-Bosch empire). Both are 66AH capacity units, and I wasn't
offered any alternatives. My OPC quoted for the battery body and acid
separately, plus charging and fitting, for 150 or so. This was gracefully
declined - the Bosch was 55 I think. Fit is perfect.

I believe that the cold-cranking power is of similar significance to the
bare charge capacity, and that this is where the Silver's have an edge on
10-year old battery technology. I'm still pursuing the idea of a solar
battery charger for the 928 as mine lives on the street and can't be
connected to a mains conditioner as used by the PO. Slightly encouraged by
the presence in a Porsche accessories catalogue of a mains-based conditioner
which attaches to the cigarette lighter socket, which suggests that this is
a live circuit even with the ignition off (at least for some Porsches).

So; I don't think your PO was cutting corners, just buying what he was
offered by a non-OPC.

	Good evening,

Missed out on the meet yesterday...dead battery, just my luck!!!
Notice
that it is a Bosch
Silver but 66Ah rating. The handbook states 72Ah. Possibly last
owner
was
cutting corners? Can anyone recommend a decent battery that packages
well in
the limited space for a 90 GT?

I also noticed a small plastic box of electronics sandwiched under
the
earthing strap in the rear close to the battery flip lid. I had to
take
toe
cover off to get the earthing strap out of the way of the opening
arc
of the
battery lid. One of the components on the motherboard is missing a
leg...Can
anyone help with what this box controls? Could it be part of the
security
system? It has a red and black wire going to it suggesting it may be
part of
fuel cut-off for the alarm etc..
    	Thanks in advance,

    	Nadeem
