Split boots night work, but if the old boot was spilt, you really ought to
clean it out and pack it with new grease.
What on earth do you mean by " undoing these makes the crank bolt look
loose! ". Have you heard of the handbrake?
And you spout more rubbish when you say " the early car owners can drop the
half shafts easily - we cannot!". I've done both, and the later ones are no
more difficult to "drop", just slightly more difficult to get apart to clean
out.
Yes, you can take the early shafts off the outside UJ, but if you do that,
you can't do a proper cleaning job.
I apologise if my tone sounds aggressive, but I'm getting tired of people
mailing stuff to this list which makes 928s sound hard to work on. If you
want a premium car, either be prepared to do jobs properly, or be prepared
to pay premium rates to get the job done for you.

Evening -
At the risk of being blasphemous for the purists amongst us - I went for a
universal kit of split boots which mean that you cut the old one off then
clean fill and glue the new split boot - 5,000 miles later and still no
probs.........I also did not have to remove the half shaft and undo the rear
wheel shaft nuts (undoing these makes the crank bolt look loose!) that we S4
owners have to contend with..... the early car owners can drop the half
shafts easily - we cannot!
Checked them again last service and no probs
Regards..........Andy
