Running a 928 in the uk

{mosgoogle} So the 928 is a great car but is it expensive to run? Well, it might not be as expensive as you fear: The minimum is probably around £2000 per year, excluding road tax, tyres and consumables - You need these or you repmobile anyway! Heres the calculation:-

Road Tax and MOT Certificate

As for all cars, this is a standard cost per annum.

Insurance

The 928 is in the top insurance group (group 20), though rates can be quite reasonable. As with any insurance, really shop around to find the best deal. Most companies will consider only fully comprehensive insurance for such a high-performance car.

If the car is not to be garaged overnight, then all insurance companies will insist that a Thatcham category 1 alarm / immobiliser should be fitted. For example the Clifford Concept 50X which costs approximately £550 fitted. The Porsche System 2000 costs £750 fitted from a main dealer.

Servicing

The frequency depends on your car’s annual mileage (see servicing) but you should budget for a full 12,000 service whatever. Budget for at least £450 and realistically £900, which should cover the cost of a basic service, plus MOT stuff although the service is bound to highlight some other problems that require attention.

Look for fixed price servicing offers from main dealers - see the offers pages

Surprises

Budget for a project each year of about £1000. You may get a nasty surprise that needs this expenditure but if you tackel a project each year you will prevent surprises over time.

Petrol

Most 928's will deliver broadly similar fuel consumption as follows:
Cruising / Motorway driving 20-22 mpg
Spirited driving / around town 15-19 mpg
Very hard driving / inner city 10-12 mpg
Please remember that the car will use more when the engine as cold. For example, a short inner London trip, were the engine just warms up at the end of the journey, will only deliver 8-10mpg.

Tyres

928s are big high-performance cars and they are heavy on tyres. Budget for new rears every 8-10,000 miles and new fronts every 15,000 to 20,000 miles in average use. The cost of the tyres will depend on the size of the wheels and the standard of tyre you choose to run.
