Performance
{mosgoogle}
The following data has been compiled from road test results from the 928 Books available. The figures quoted in the charts are an average of all the road tests available.
All cars are 5 speed manual unless otherwise stated.
Figures in italics are estimates.
Perhaps not surprisingly the 928 S4 SE or Sport is the best performance model. This limited model based on the even more limited Club Sport was the closest the 928 range have had to an 'RS' model. The GT was a softened derivative and the GTS close but softer too.

Notes:
The top speed of the S4 Sport is
estimated at 173 mph. A Club Sport was tested by a German
magazine at this speed.
Devek's 6.0 litre 928 S4
"White Car" has been radar trapped at over 200mph in
the USA.
A 928 S4 was recorded at 171mph
at Bonneville Salt Flats USA in 1987.
The 928 S2 Auto was over-geared.
The car is pulling just 4900rpm at its maximum of 154mph - some
1000rpm off maximum power.

Notes:
The 928 S and 928 Auto's perform relatively poorly because they have 3 gears.
The 928 S2 Auto performs
relatively poorly because of high gearing.

Notes:
The extra top end power and
lighter weight allows the S4 Sport to really begin to pull away.
Georg Kacker (of CAR magazine) remarked at the time that only
the 959 had more grunt over 125mph than a Club Sport / SE
The 928 S2 Auto really suffers
for its high gearing. The 928 S Auto, with 10bhp less and
a gear down, is a second faster to 100 mph.

Notes: For this "on the road"
performance comparison gearing is everything. The
automatic's do particularly well because they can all pull over
70mph in 2nd gear.
The 928 GTS's and the S4 Sport
are neck and neck. Though the Sport is lighter - by maybe
200lbs - this does re-affirm the view that the S4 Sport / CS
engine produced more than the claimed 320bhp - much nearer the
350bhp of the GTS.

Notes: The 928 GT pulls well ahead of
the S4 auto, the GTs much lower 3rd gear giving it the big
advantage. |
