Jerry gets a podium - 3rd in class 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations Jerry on a wonderful finish to your 2007 season

Last Saturday and Sunday was the closing race weekend of the season for the Belcar cup. Heres Jerrys report in full with a couple of pictures.

Jerry on the podium at SPA having come 3rd in class

The Spa track has always been something special and now that they've improved the safety, it's even better. Too bad they took out the Bus stop.

Anyway, we had two qualifyings on Saturday and the race on Sunday. First qualifying was in the dry, but i decided not to push too hard at the beginning because i don't know the track very well. After a lap or three i started pushing a bit harder until i was comfortable with the car. This resulted in a 3.05 lap time which i felt could be improved by at least another second if i changed my front tires and let some air out of the rears. So that's what i did for the second qualifiyng in the afternoon. Unfortunately, 5 minutes before our second practice, it started pouring down, so that was that. I went out on the same tires (i don't have real rain tires anyway) and the car felt good, but of course it was impossible to improve the times.

So with qualifying behind us, this left me in 8th position on th egrid, right behind the dreaded Camaro and in front of the Escort i'd been chasing before i went off in April.

I normally expected to be positioned better but i didn't know a certain British guest driver in a Lister Jaguar would be joining us, together with another Lotus driver, so looking at our "regular" field, i would have been 6th.

Then the race: it had been raining practically all night and since our race started at 9.30 in the morning, we were in for a wet track.

I got of to a very good start, passed the Camaro and went up on the Raidillon side by side with a Renault (who was in the modern Sprinters' class). On top of raidillon, he kinda forced me to the inside of the turn where i touched the wet curb with two wheels (bad thing!). Following that the car went sideways somewhat, but i managed to get her in line again by going over the curb onto the grass and then back on the track (i'll send the youtube link tomorrow). This did cost me two places (the Escort and the yellow TR3 got past me), because naturally the grass had slowed me down some. After this incident, it all went smoothly, even though the track remained wet for the entire race. I made it through the first lap in which i took back the TR3, and i was closing in on the Escort when he went of with a puncture. So i was running in 7th when the Camaro turned up in my rear view mirror. I knew i was faster that him up Raidillon and through Les Combes, but he came very close after Blanchimont and up on the Kemmel which is where you can realy use the horsepower. So after a few try runs, he passed me at Kemmel on pure power, i mean he really blew past me (of course he's got 400BHP+) which put me in 8th again, and 4th in class. I kept up with him and decided to try and take him again in the more twisty sections of the track when the 911 of last years' champion (and Belgian Classic Porsche club) came up on me from behind. So we had a little train of three with me in the middle, trying not to loose touch with the Camaro, but in the same time fencing off the 911. One lap later, the Camaro retired with a busted valve, so i could concentrate on keeping the 911 behind me. He gave it a go once after the Raidillon, and he must have thought he had me because we where right next to each other for a short time until ... i shifted to fifth and this time it was the 928's HP's who did the trick :-) , after that, he never came close enough to treathen me so i finished seventh in general and 3rd in class, which meant podium time!

I had a fantastic race weekend and it was the perfect finale to a season that started pretty disastrously in April. The car is great, reliable and it's really a shame i won't be able to use it in this series next year.

I'd like to thank all you guys who supported me with your comments and tech help this year and i hope to be able to use the car for something else next season.

Cheers, Jerry
