944 forged light alloys PDF Print E-mail
Dear Sir, I own a 1988 944 turbo. The car came with 16 inch forged light alloy wheels which look identicle to those on your site. The only difference being the width, mine are 7.5 at the front and 9 at the rear. I have been looking for another set which are new or at least in a much better condition than mine. Have you heard of any one who specialises in these. I appreciate that this is not a 928 subject but I would appreciate your help.
Best regards,
Alan
Alan, you did come to the right place... Ive had two 928s with these wheels.
The forged light alloy wheels were only available in 1988 and 1989. They were standard on the 944 Turbo S and SE, (notably on the Silver Rose model for the UK) and on the 928 S4 SE and then the 1989 928 GT. As you mention they are the same design but different sizes for the 928 and the 944. 944 Racing (External Link) has all the details of the partnumbers / offsets etc.
Diamond Styling quote over 200 per wheel to re-anodise these wheels. I had mine done on my 928 SE and they were perfect for a while but soon faded again. They are difficult to find in nice condition and difficult to look after. Wonder wheels spoils them with streaks as I found to my cost. They appeal because they are less unsprung weight and they do look very very good on the cars. Other people who have them on 928s have had them polished which looks awful in my opinion or powder coated which looks great and it easier to maintain and cheap to do.
Jasmine would be my first port of call for them. Ebay second. Jasmine only sell Porsche wheels and would be able to find some that were perfect and cheaper than having yours refurbished I would think.
Angus
